Access 2007 Creating a Database Workshop

Build an Access database in a supportive learning environment. Each participant will create a database structure independently. At the end of each workshop day, participants will have the opportunity to perform independent work with the trainer/consultant available in the classroom (1-2 hours).

Recommended Preparation: Access 2007 Advanced or equivalent experience. Familiary with Visual Basic for Applications is helpful but not required.

Day 1 (8:30 – 4:30): Database design and table structures

Design a database using principles of best practices. Build tables and relationships.

Process for designing a database
Determine needs and purpose of the database
Work with normalization
Define table structures
Design table structures
Create use cases
Create table relationships
Set table properties

Day 2 (8:30 – 4:30): Form creation

Finalize table structures. Create main forms.

Basic and advanced form creation
Layout and design techniques
Using form tools –wizards

Day 3 (8:30 – 4:30): Advanced Forms and Queries

Add sub forms and build basic automation in forms.

Create sub forms
Create query expressions
Basic automation using macros
Calculations and expressions
Use Parameters

Day 4 (8:30 – 4:30): Advanced Queries and Reports

Create report queries, ad hoc queries and related reports.

Parameter queries
Report wizard
Modifying reports
Joining tables in queries
Adding expressions and calculations to reports

Day 5 (8:30 – 4:30): Finalize Database

Add main menu. Test database functionality. Troubleshoot errors.
