Unity House provides services to help those who are hurting and struggling.

For 40 years now, Unity House has been making life better for residents of the Capital Region. This Rensselaer County based human services agency provides services to meet the otherwise unmet needs of people in our community who are hurting and struggling.

In 2010 alone, 2,500 families received emergency services; the essentials of housing, food, jobs and education; and guidance toward a better life, all provided by Unity House. This vital community organization assists those who are living in poverty, adults living with mental illness or HIV/AIDS, victims of domestic violence, and children with developmental delays. In addition, the dedicated and committed staff at Unity House works to achieve social justice in our community and to create a better understanding of the people they serve.

A brief look at the impact that Unity House has on our community shows that in 2010:

• Under the Street Ministry program, 6,072 three-day supplies of food were provided from the food pantry and 90 adults were provided with 2,566 hours of employment training.
• Through the Housing Support Services program for adults living with mental illness, HIV/AIDS and/or chemical dependency, 276 adults lived independently with caseworker support.
• The Domestic Violence Services program for victims seeking safety and violence-free lives provided non-residential services to 787 victims and their 1,147 children; 85 women and 50 children found refuge in Unity House’s 18-bed shelter.
• As part of the Unity Sunshine program, 308 children ages six weeks to five years received quality, affordable day care at four locations in Troy and Albany, and 120 children living in poverty enjoyed two weeks with the Unity House Traveling Summer Day Camp.
