The Albany Symphony: One of the country’s great orchestras

Professor John Carabella founded the Albany Symphony in 1930, in the throes of the Great Depression, boldly proclaiming: “I’m going to give this great city a first rate symphony orchestra whether they want it or not.”

Today, the Albany Symphony continues to fulfill Carabella’s promise. The orchestra, one of this region’s most revered music and cultural institutions, has won numerous national awards for its adventurous concert programming, recording projects, composer residencies, and innovative educational efforts involving area schools throughout the region.

As the only professional symphony orchestra based within the Capital Region, the Albany Symphony enriches a broad and diverse regional community, engaging more than 150,000 people each year across an extended geographical area. Its innovative educational programs reach a large portion of the Capital Region’s youth, including both Albany and Troy City School districts, and have earned numerous national awards.

But central to the organization is its commitment to creativity and innovation. What makes the Albany Symphony innovative?

Its pioneering spirit: Under the dynamic guidance of Music Director David Alan Miller, who leads the orchestra field by reinventing and reinvigorating the concert experience, it is a pioneer among orchestras.

The orchestra of the future: It’s an organization that is dedicated to helping create the future of orchestras through the music it commissions and performs, the audiences that come to experience and be inspired by it, and the ways in which it does business.

Recently proclaimed by the American Record Guide as “now one of the country’s great orchestras,” the Albany Symphony recently made its debut at Carnegie Hall in May 2010 where the orchestra was honored for its creative programming as part of the first-ever Spring for Music Festival.

The Albany Symphony and Miller will kick off the 2011-2012 season, its 81st season of bringing great musical experiences to the community, in September 2011. Highlighted by a special concert with Joshua Bell, “the greatest American violinist active today” [Boston Herald], the concert season features a wide array of world-class artists, international leaders in composition, and favorites of the repertoire.
